North Fourth Art Center supports two community performing companies, one theater, one dance. Both Equilibrium Theater (ETC) and Buen Viaje Dance (BVD) are directed, taught and nurtured by professional performing artists as they create, rehearse and perform their original works of drama and dance.

So far it sounds like all of the other dedicated community theater and dance in Albuquerque, right? All those hard-working talented artists, working for a pittance…or nothing. Just determined to practice their chosen arts.

In many ways the artists of ETC and BVD are just like all of those other fine artists. However in at least one way they are unique. Most of them deal with one disability or the other—which sometimes seems to overshadow the multitude of abilities they have, both individually and as a group.

This weekend (June 28, 29) those abilities such as talent, creativity, inventiveness and determination have been on full display as they perform the 2013 productions of original works: EquilibriumTheater Company’s “Breaking Bars” and Buen Viaje Dance Company’s “Whimsey.”

WHAT A GROUP!

WHAT A GROUP!

We always say this but it might be true—they just keep getting better and better! Equilibrium’s “Breaking Bars” was written by the company with the able guidance of theater artist/writer/director Peter Diseth.  Equilibrium’s teacher and artistic director, Kate Costello, did an excellent job of honing in on each actor’s particular talents, whether the over-the-top theatrics of Esmeralda Cernius or the big dramatic presence of James Sobczak Jr.. The company, along Kate and Peter, did the best job yet of matching acting styles and experience with particular actors. “Breaking Bars” moved along at a fast professional pace with never a boring moment. Good job ALL.

Buen Viaje Dance has a strong public profile because of its long history in the community. The artistic director, Bradd Howard, has maintained continuity of excellence and experimentation as well as adding his own dance perspective to the company’s repertory.  Pieces in “Whimsy” include two choreographed by Bradd and four by company members. The overall mood of the dance program was both lyrical and personal.  Some seasons have included more playful works and, while there were certainly elements of humor in Theo Arellano’s piece “Karate Dance,” overall it was a straightforward program of whimsically-themed contemporary dance. The work was all interesting, original and professionally presented. But of course each of us will always have our favorites—mine was “Hallelujah; I am; Hallelujah” choreographed by Bill Zimmer and danced by Bill and Diana Phillips. It is that odd thing of being simple and intricate at the same time; can I just say simply beautiful with small movements that are intricate/delicate/perfect. “Times Infinity,” choreographed by Bradd and danced by the company was awesome as well…or should I say agreeably danced and colorfully enhanced with both hoops and lighting adding to the overall effect of a vibrant and lively spectacle.

KATE AND BRADD, GOOD JOB!

Congratulations to Everyone. Thanks for an exciting weekend.
